Illegal Dumpsites

50 Greenspace Dumpsites

Throughout the city of Pittsburgh, there are almost 300 surveyed illegal dumpsites. It’s estimated that this only represents a third of the dumpsites within city limits. These places exist on the sides of steep hills, near residential streets, and even on the perimeters of greenspaces.

The dumping of different materials and waste is almost common; old shingles, carpeting, tons of tires and household garbage litter the scenes. The photographs we have begun making are unassuming landscapes; they are also visual surveys of greenspaces near

dumpsites. Maps, data and a website which will show additional images of the site are part of the overall project. Christine Holtz & Lauren S Zadikow have been collaborating since 2012.
